Kevin Garraway, the man who police said had confessed to a murder at Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, has been charged with the crime.
The courtroom of Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul heard that on June 3, at Plaisance, Garraway, 20, of Calendar Street, Albouystown, murdered Orrette West. Garraway was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
According to Police Prosecutor David Goodridge, on the day in question, around 12.30 am, the suspect, who had a problem with the deceased’s girlfriend, walked up to him and asked if he [West] still wanted a problem with him [Garraway]. West then pushed Garraway away and a scuffle ensued between the two men.
Goodridge said Garraway, who had a knife in his hand, started to stab West. “One of the stabs connected to the deceased’s chest,” the prosecutor told the court. West was eventually rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Goodridge went on to say that, acting on information, on September 22 the police contacted Garraway and he was arrested and questioned. The prosecutor said Garraway gave the police a statement, under caution, where he confessed to the murder.
Magistrate Ally-Seepaul remanded Garraway to prison. The matter was adjourned until October 27.
