A date was set yesterday for the trial of Ishwar Heeralall, who was charged with chopping his estranged wife at La Penitence Market in July.
Heeralall was charged by Magistrate Judy Latchman with unlawfully and maliciously wounding Wanita Heeralall, with intent to commit murder.
When the matter was called by Magistrate Latchman yesterday, a letter was presented to the prosecutor on behalf of the defendant’s attorney who was unable to make the court date and requested an adjournment.
The letter also appeared to have indicated that the ex-wife of the defendant no longer wanted to go ahead with the matter.
However, according to Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt the complainant made no such indication to him.
Magistrate Latchman subsequently adjourned the matter to October 12 when the trial is expected to begin.
The charge against the defendant arose as a result of a confrontation between the couple at the market, where Ishwar allegedly dealt Wanita, several chops to her body, including her forehead.
