The Guyana Police Force has been attracting highly qualified recruits, including persons who have graduated from university with diplomas and degrees and according to Acting Commissioner of Police David Ramnarine this is an encouragement to persons who may want to join later.
During last year, he said, seven officers and 11 subordinate officers graduated from the University of Guyana four of whom attained degrees.
Apart from this, he said, of the number of ranks recruited between 2015 to this year, 56 were holders of Caribbean Secondary Education Certificates with between five to eight subjects, 15 had ten or more subjects, six had diplomas and another 6 had degrees.
Ramnarine explained, “Years ago, it used to be that we employed people with a sound primary education. Then it shifted a bit to a sound secondary education. Today it is obvious that the force is very attractive, it’s a place where people with degrees and diplomas are serving….”
During last year, 36 officers ranging from Cadet Officer to Assistant Commissioner of Police were among a number of junior ranks who completed various sponsored programmes, which will assist in sustaining and maintaining the capacity and capability of the Guyana Police Force.
Among a batch which will be commencing training tomorrow, he said, is someone who holds a law degree and another with a degree in economics.
Next month, the force will receive training from four overseas groups who will be visiting Guyana, Ramnarine said. The groups are Impact Justice Training, Cave Hill School of Business, United Kingdom Border Force and Justice Education Society of Canada.
“We are very fortunate to be receiving so much training within the last few years. It is intended to build capacity and capability… to deliver a better quality of service to the public. We are extremely thankful and grateful,” Ramnarine concluded.
