Following the unavailability of experienced duo Gregory Richardson and Devon Millington and the injury to England-based Neil Danns, the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has shortlisted a 22-member squad for upcoming the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Caribbean Cup third round qualifiers.
According to a release from the federation, five newcomers have made the provisional team which will be trimmed down to 20 to faceoff with Suriname in Paramaribo on October 8th and Jamaica three days later at the Leonora Sports Facility.
Of the 22 players, 13 are foreign born and/or based, with the remaining eight squad members coming from Alpha United and Slingerz FC correspondingly. The final squad is expected to be named in the following days.
Making a return to the team will be skipper Christopher Nurse. Nurse missed the last round of matches when Guyana lost to Curacao but defeated US Virgin Islands in the second round of the tournament in June.
While Nurse returns, inspirational midfielder Danns is out through injury.
So too are strikers Sheldon Holder, Emery Welshman and Canada-based goalkeeper Anthony Whyte.
According to the release, Canada-based schoolboy Shaquille Agard could not get enough time off from school and Millington, Richardson and Kester Jacobs have all made themselves unavailable.
However, Head Coach Jamaal Shabazz has invited USA-based schoolboys, winger Cash Londo,n who plays for Cal Poly San Luis in California, goalkeeper Andrew Nestor, who plays for St. Francis in Brooklyn, New York and Anani Mohammed, who recently signed with Mexican Second Division team Atalante.
There are two additional surprise call up in Kai McKenzie Lyle, a 6ft 5 “ goalkeeper who plays for Barnett in the English Division Two and USA-born midfielder Warren Creavalle who plays for the Philadelphia Union in the MLS.
