National Grade Six Assessment 2016 top performers from the East Coast of Demerara were last week rewarded at Benjamin’s Bakery’s tenth Annual Bursary Ceremony.
According to a press release from the Ministry of the Presidency, First Lady, Sandra Granger, speaking at the event, urged the children to ‘be all they can be’ even as she reminded them that they must never forget where they came from or whose shoulders they stood on to achieve their success.
Kevon Benjamin, son of the proprietor, Wesley Benjamin, told the students that they must see the incentive as a means of motivation to keep working harder as they pursue their education so that they can achieve success in life, the release said.
“Contentment does not end with receiving only but when you receive, you must give back and I know that this is my father’s belief. You students are very lucky. Please do not see this as an increase in your spending ability or to buy fancy things but see it as a means of encouragement to reach higher heights,” the release quoted him as saying.
Morris Wilson, a prominent villager, praised the Benjamin family for the initiative, as he noted that it is one that will certainly make a difference in the lives of the awardees.
The release stated that Aletha Joseph, one of the awardees, who hails from Montrose Primary and placed 15th in the country with 558 marks, securing a place at Queen’s College, expressed gratitude to the family for their generosity and she noted that it is a good feeling to be recognised and appreciated.
The other awardees were Katima Hinds from the Beterverwagting Primary, who secured 518 marks, gaining a place at St. Rose’s High, Daniel Persaud from the Mon Repos Primary with 505 marks gaining a place at President’s College, Chaitram Achaibar from the Lusignan Primary, who secured 539 marks thereby gaining a place at the Bishops’ High, Darshanie Budhram from the Annandale Primary, who gained 519 marks and was awarded a place at the St. Rose’s High, Nicholas Simon from Buxton Primary with a score of 515 marks and a place at St. Joseph’s High, Kaiamsha McAndrew from Company Road Primary with 511 marks and a place at the St. Joseph’s High, Omari Smart from the Friendship Primary, who secured 539 marks and a place at the Bishops’ High, Jenifer Chulal, who hails from the Strathspey Primary and gained a place at Queen’s College with 555 marks, Joel Antonio Ally from Enterprise Primary, who secured a place at the Bishop’ High with 532 marks and Kelon Cardwel Holder from Paradise Primary, who gained 511 marks to be accepted at the St. Joseph’s High.
