Big haul!

Two gold, two silver and a bronze medal were what Guyana’s five-member team bagged from the biggest Central American and Caribbean (CAC) bodybuilding competition in its 44-year history over the weekend in the Dominican Republic.

Gold went to Kerwin Clarke (light middle) and United States of America-based Bruce Whatley (Master’s), while Emmerson Campbell (Men’s Physique) snared a silver and Devon Davis (bantamweight) copped bronze in the event which attracted a record 385 athletes from 30 territories. Whatley also flexed and posed his way to a silver in the middle weight class which was won by the eventual overall winner.

Guyana’s other representative, Alisha Fortune was not as fortunate as her countrymen and was unable to qualify for the finals in the Body Fitness category.

Clarke, the four-time Mr. Guyana and two-time CAC bronze medalist, added gold to his resume after using his sharp physique to slice through the 11-man category on his way to the top of the podium.

Whatley brought his best shape and conditioning to the stage after a disappointing showing in the 42nd edition of the championships in 2014.

After taking last year off, the 185-pound mass of striated muscle returned with a vengeance and was rewarded with hearing the National Anthem at center stage.

After placing fourth in his debut season last year in the Bahamas, Campbell brought the size, shape conditioning and the v-taper the judges were looking for to crack the top two in a stacked line up of 18 chiseled musclemen in the under 174cm class. He will no doubt be gunning for the gold next year in Mexico as will Davis who placed third in the four-man line up.

The team is scheduled to return from the most prestigious regional fitness event some time later this week.
