ST JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – Experienced seamer and vice-captain, Shakera Selman, has been left out of a 13-member West Indies Women’s squad named on Monday for the first three One-Day Internationals of the five-match series against England Women starting next weekend in Jamaica.
The 27-year-old Barbadian was one of five players to be cut from the 18-member training squad which were in camp in Jamaica in recent weeks, with Kycia Knight, Akeira Peters, Chedean Nation and Shanel Daley also excluded.
Selman, a member of the successful unit which captured the Twenty20 World Cup back in April, has played 62 ODIs and 59 T20s since her debut in 2008. However, she managed just one wicket in
three ODIs against South Africa last February and failed to play a game in the subsequent Twenty20 World Cup.
Like Selman, Knight was also a part of the successful T20 World Cup squad but also struggled for form on the tour of South Africa.
Meanwhile, uncapped 30-year-old fast bowler Erva Giddings has been included in the line-up, as the only new face.
The Guyanese joins an otherwise predictable squad which will be led by the outstanding Stafanie Taylor and which includes the likes of seasoned campaigners Deandra Dottin, former captain Merissa Aguilleira and Anisa Mohammed.
West Indies take on England in the five-match five ODI series from October 8-19 at the Trelawny Multiplex on Jamaica’s north coast and Sabina Park in the capitals Kingston.
The last three ODIs will count towards the ICC Women’s Championship, where West Indies currently lie second on 20 points behind leaders Australia Women on 30.
England Women, meanwhile, are third on 19.
The top four sides in the Championship will gain automatic qualification for next year’s 50-overs World Cup in England.
SQUAD – Stafanie Taylor (captain), Anisa Mohammed (vice-captain), Merissa Aguilleira, Shemaine Campbelle, Shamilia Connell, Britney Cooper, Deandra Dottin, Afy Fletcher, Erva Giddings, Stacy-Ann King, Hayley Matthews, Shaquana Quintyne, Tremayne Smartt.
