A jury was yesterday empaneled for the trial of Lloyd Britton in the 2013 murder of Elvis Fernandes, who was shot dead on Mandela Avenue during an argument between two motorists.
Britton, called ‘Lloyden Britton,’ of 77 Surat Drive, Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, is alleged to have murdered Fernandes on July 26, 2013.
The accused, who is represented by Attorney Nigel Hughes, entered a formal plea of not guilty.
Thus, far, the prosecution has called one witness in the matter which is being heard by Justice James Bovell Drakes at the High Court.
Stabroek News had reported that the dead man was involved in an argument between a minibus driver and the driver of a car that he was in at the time. Police in a statement said that Fernandes was shot to his chest by a passenger in the bus, who had begun discharging rounds from a firearm.
A plain clothes policeman, who was making efforts to pacify the situation, responded and discharged a round from his service firearm which struck Britton, the statement had said, adding that the armed man re-entered the mini-bus and was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital by the driver.
The case is expected to continue on Thursday at the High Court.
