Munir Mohamed, the truck driver who was involved in an accident at Providence, East Bank Demerara that left a porter dead last month, was yesterday released on $340,000 bail after denying three charges, including causing death by dangerous driving.
Mohamed, of Lot 146 Marshon Street, Annandale, East Coast Demerara, appeared before city magistrate Faith McGusty with the aid of his family.
Mohamed, who could not stand up due to injuries he sustained in the accident, pleaded not guilty to the charges. It is alleged that on September 6th, at Providence, he drove GGG 645 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Dhanraj Datturam. It is also alleged that he was an unlicensed driver at the time of the accident and did not have an in force insurance policy in respect of third party risks.
Datturam, 51, a porter, and Mohamed, were driving along the East Bank Public Road when their vehicle slammed into the trailer of another truck, GSS 1687, which was said to have been parked in front the National Stadium.
Datturam was pinned down in the vehicle and the Guyana Fire Service had to be summoned to help free his body. Both men were transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where Datturam was pronounced dead and Mohamed was admitted as a patient.
Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman had no objections to Mohamed receiving bail yesterday.
Magistrate McGusty set bail for Mohamed at $300,000 on the charge of causing death and $20,000 bail each on the other two charges. The matters were later adjourned to October 28th.
