Another page will be written today in their historic rivalry when Guyana match skills with Suriname in the third round of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Caribbean Cup Qualifiers at the Andre Kamperveen Stadium in Paramaribo from 20:00hrs.
History will be on the side of the Dutch nation as they boast a superior 14-7 record in the previous 27 meetings, with six fixtures ending in a drawn result.
However, the most recent fixture hosted in 2016 at the Providence Stadium witnessed Guyana defeating an under strength Dutch unit 2-0. A closer look at the recent 12 meetings highlight that the Guyanese has been on par with their rival.
During this period, Guyana has claimed five wins, six losses alongside a stalemate to justify their improvement. In terms of the overall numbers in the rivalry, Suriname has recorded 42 goals at a rate of 1.56 goals per match.
For the Guyanese, 30 goals have been fashioned at an average of 1.11 per game. Analysis of their respective statistics during the ongoing event showcase the contrasting route taken to this stage.
In the case of the Surinamese, they scored only five goals in their three wins over the likes of Guadeloupe (who they defeated twice following the withdrawal of Saint Maarten in the group) and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Defensively, they have shipped in four goals inclusive of a 1-0 loss to St. Kitts and Nevis, their only blemish to date.
On the other side, Guyana has had a relatively easier route with wins over Anguilla, Puerto Rico and United States Virgin Island, with their lonely defeat coming at the hands of Curacao via a 5-2 margin.
Offensively, the visitors has racked up 17 goals while their rearguard has only been breached in the Curacao contest.
In terms of their current ranking on the world ladder, Guyana currently sit 118th despite being second best in the rivalry while their opponent are currently positioned on 175th.
Guyana’s best ever ranking was 86th and it was recorded on November 2010, the same year of the last triumph against Suriname. On the other hand, the Dutch nation’s best ever position was 84th and this was achieved on August 2008.
