A 75-year-old motorcyclist succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning, just hours after he was involved in a collision with a minibus along Sheriff Street.
Dead is Oswy Crum-Ewing, a father of five and a handyman who lived at Lot 79 North Sophia.
The accident occurred around 6.35 am in the vicinity of DSL Cash and Carry on Sheriff Street.
According to reports reaching Stabroek News, Crum-Ewing had just exited John Smith Street, Campbellville and was about to cross Sheriff Street when he collided with a minibus
which was proceeding south
along Sheriff Street.
He was picked up in a conscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he died around 11.30 am while receiving medical attention.
The driver of the minibus was arrested and is assisting the police with investigations.
Speaking to this newspaper yesterday, the dead man’s granddaughter, Samantha Duncan said she was cooking at her West Ruimveldt home when someone who knows the family visited to show her a photograph of the damaged motorcycle. “He ask me if this is not our bike and I say yes, but I didn’t know what went on,” Duncan said.
She immediately left for the hospital where she met another relative. “She [the relative] carry me in, because she does work there and I see my grandfather. I talk to him but he did not respond until after a while when he ask me to rub his foot and hand,” she related.
She said while Crum-Ewing was able to speak he could not recall what transpired. An x-ray was performed which revealed that he sustained internal injuries and punctured lungs.
The grieving woman was unable to state where her grandfather was heading at the time of the accident but said based on information she received he was about to cross Sheriff Street to visit the gas station when the collision occurred.
A post-mortem examination is scheduled for tomorrow and charges are likely to be laid soon.
