The Guyana Medical Relief donated medical supplies on Tuesday last valued at $18 million, whilst Food for the Poor Inc, provided a truck load of goods, to Region Six Health Services.
Jevaughn Stephen, Director of Regional Health Services, speaking during the handing over ceremony held at the Regional Health Services boardroom stated that such donations play a role in successfully completing the Health Vision 2020. He stressed the importance of partnerships with stakeholders in order to improve health care delivery in the region.
“We cannot always depend on central government for funding, we need to ensure we forge good partnerships with stakeholders,” he noted. According to Stephen, over the past seven months Food for the Poor Inc along with the Regional Health Services had embarked on a number of outreach activities “to ensure that the public regains trust in the public health system.”
He stated that the items donated will be distributed to all of the hospitals, as well as the health centres in the region.
He said the vision was to have patients able to visit community health centres and access standard treatment and care. “I know at the moment that if you go to some health centres there is access to a little bit, while at others you have access to more, the idea is to ensure that all of our health centres have a standard of service delivery and all provide the same care for our patients,” he said. “To achieve that, like I said, collaboration and partnership are necessary.”
Stephen expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the donations on behalf of the region.
