Guyana’s third round campaign in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Caribbean Cup qualifiers got off to the worst possible start when the national senior team went down to hosts Suriname 2-3 in extra time yesterday at the Andre Kamperveen Stadium.
Requiring the additional interval after normal time ended 1-1, the visitors fell behind in the 103rd minute in what was the 28th meeting of the nations as Galgyto Talea found the back of the net.
It went from bad to worse for the Guyanese as the home side scored six minutes later through Lothar Rozenblad. The Golden Jaguars were eventually able to find a consolation goal during the period as Kai McKenzie-Lyle scored in the 120th.
Prior to the extra time conclusion, Guyana got off to the perfect start as Colin Nelson etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the second minute. This lead was maintained into the half time interval.
However the Surinamese levelled proceedings when Mitchell Kisoor made his presence felt with a 57th minute strike. It was the 15th defeat for the Guyanese against the Dutch nation, who drop to the bottom of the standings on zero points.
Suriname climb to the top of the table on three points. Guyana will now faceoff with defending champion Jamaica in their final group contest on October 11th at the National Track and Field Centre at Leonora in a must win fixture to keep their hopes alive of qualification to the next round.
Similarly, the Surinamese will faceoff with the Jamaicans in their final group fixture on October 13th in the Kingston. Only one team from the group will qualify automatically to the next round.
