Fire damages LBI community centre’s fence

The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) will be reconstructing the fence of the La Bonne Intention (LBI) Community Centre Ground, after sections were damaged by a grass fire last week Monday.

Chief Executive Officer of GuySuCo Paul Bhim yesterday said the company would have to reconstruct the fence since the centre is still owned and managed by it. He did not give a date when the fence would be repaired.

According to the Better Hope/La Bonne Intention Neighbourhood Democratic Council Chairman Zaman Shaw, the fire started sometime after 3pm. He noted that vegetation inside the ground was cut by GuySuCo and left to dry. “Apparently, what happened, a fire was started outside and it quickly spread throughout the field. The fence … caught on fire also,” Shaw explained.

Shaw, in a Facebook post made on the day of the fire, said members of the Guyana Fire Service responded and managed to prevent the flames from spreading to the buildings.

Currently, the ground is being prepared to serve as the endpoint for the annual Deepavali motorcade.
