A Friendship man was on Friday released on bail after he denied a charge that he stole $175,000 in items.
Anthony Lall, 21, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on a charge that he stole a $100,000 television set, a $15,000 cooking gas bottle and two 50-gallon water tanks, valued at $60,000 and which were the property of Shonette Douglas.
The theft allegedly occurred between September 30 and October 3, at Friendship, East Bank Demerara.
Lall pleaded guilty to stealing the water tanks but not guilty to the other charge.
According to the prosecutor, on September 30, Douglas left her home and returned on October 3 to find the items mentioned in the charge missing and her louvre windows broken.
Acting on information, the police arrested Lall, who took them to the area where the tanks were located.
However, Lall told the court that he did not steal the tanks; instead, he said they were given to him by two men. He admitted that he did sell the tanks but continued to deny stealing them.
After his explanation, a not guilty plea was entered in relation to the charge concerning the theft of the water tanks.
Lall was subsequently granted $25,000 bail and ordered to report to the Providence Magistrates’ Court on October 13.
