A man was shot in his back by men on a bicycle last night while he was standing on the West Front Road, a short distance away from his mother’s home.
Listed as critical at the Georgetown Public Hospital, is Wayne Jackson Wharton, 25, of 277 Onderneeming, West Coast Demerara.
The shooting took place at approximately 8:00 pm, relatives of Wharton told Stabroek News as they were waiting outside of the hospital to receive further information on his condition.
Wharton’s sister who declined to give her name said that from the information they received, her brother was standing on the road with some friends when men on a bicycle rode up and shot him at close range. The woman said that after the shooting they immediately rushed her brother to the hospital.
When Stabroek News visited the scene of the shooting, one eyewitness said that after the shots were fired the men rode away heading east along West Front Road.
Commander of ‘A’ Division of the Guyana Police Force, Clifton Hicken, when contacted by Stabroek News said that the circumstances surrounding the shooting of Wharton is unknown at the time but the police are looking into the matter.
