The body of an unidentified male was pulled from the trench along Church Street yesterday afternoon after it was discovered floating by school children who were playing at the Merriman Mall around 3:15 pm.
One woman who operates a snackette in the mall told this newspaper that earlier in the day she saw the “object floating” but did not check since she believed it was a piece of cardboard. She explained that the man was wearing a brown shirt, and said she only became aware of the situation when the inquisitive children raised an alarm. She said she went and enquired, and the guards summoned the police.
When Stabroek News arrived on the scene, a hearse was removing the deceased. This newspaper was later told that the man’s body bore no visible signs of violence.
When persons in the area were questioned about whether they knew the man, they responded in the negative. According to the woman at the snackette, the man did not look homeless. She noted that he had on a “fancy watch and the good boots.” Meanwhile a guard said the man is suspected to be a destitute person who would normally visit the location to pick tamarinds.
The body is currently at the Lyken Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination and identification.
