A woman was yesterday remanded to prison after being charged with setting fire to a home and causing almost $2 million in damage as a result.
Naomi Williams, 25, of 62 Norton Street, Lodge, was read two charges.
It was alleged that on October 9, at 7 Miles, Mahdia, she unlawfully and maliciously set fire to a dwelling house, valued $1,600,000 and belonging to Philip Narine.
It was also alleged that on the same day, she damaged a five-piece chair set, a music box, three mattresses, two wooden bed frames, a fuel pump, four fuel injectors, two water tanks and other articles, all valued at $1,312,200 in total.
Williams, who appeared unrepresented, pleaded not guilty to both charges.
Police Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt objected to bail based on the size of the losses due to the fire. He also said Williams does not reside in Mahdia and may not make herself available for trial, which will take place in the area.
Bail was subsequently refused and Williams was remanded to prison by Magistrate Judy Latchman.
The matter will be called again on October 25, when it will be heard by the Chief Magistrate.
