Dear Editor,
As a private collector of historic memorabilia, I have adapted the ‘relays’ from sports to my personal adventure where at some stage I have to pass on the baton. One of my prized pieces is a ‘Queen’s College, British Guiana Magazine dated 1944-1945’ which mentioned some of Guyana’s most prominent names which include former President L.F.S Burnham, G.A.Gaskin (not sure if this name is related to the Minister of Business, Mr.Dominic Gaskin), S.M Insanally (relative of Guyana’s current Ambassador to the US, Mr.Riyad Insanally) etc.
A very important aspect of the magazine is a whole page advertisement for Acme Photo Studio where International Screen/Film Star ‘Ilona Massey 1910-1974, Hungarian born actress’ was featured as the first actress to pose at the local photo studio.
The late British Guiana Master Photo Artist Mr.Ashraf Ali, founder of the Acme Photo studio apparently took the photo/portrait himself of the actress.
Due to the fact that such a historic item needs a certain preservation facility with the ideal temperature, it’s unfair for me to hold on to it knowing well I don’t have access to such facility and it can be ruined. I am currently in discussion with a potential new owner and more than likely, it will change hands sooner or later.
I thought I would share this historic piece of British Guiana with the general public.
Yours faithfully
T. Pemberton
