HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC – The Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) announced on Wednesday that Canada will play three 50-over matches here later this month – even though the football season is in full swing – as the island prepares for a major tournament in the United States.
The out-of-season reciprocal trip follows Bermuda’s four-match tour of Canada last month which all ended in defeat for the visitors.
Bermuda’s trip to the upcoming ICC World Cricket League (WCL) Division Four tournament in Los Angeles, which runs from October 27 to November 4, will be a tough assignment against hosts the United States, Denmark, Oman and Italy.
“We are working hard to give our squad every opportunity to excel in the upcoming tournament in California,” BCB president Lloyd Fray said.
Bermuda cricket has been in the doldrums since the island reached the World Cup in the Caribbean in 2007, slipping from Division One to Four in the intervening years as other countries have improved.
National coach Clay Smith has been forced to call up 46-year-old Dean Minors after six wicketkeepers declared they were unavailable for the WCL tournament.
Canada will play Bermuda twice at the National Sports Centre on October 21 and 24 with the other game, set for October 23, to be played at Bailey’s Bay’s Sea Breeze Oval – one of the few club grounds not used for football.
Canada, will arrive on October 19. bring a squad of 15 players, the BCB said.
