Annona muricata commonly called Soursop or Guanabana by the Spanish originated in the Peruvian rainforest and the lowlands of Central America; it comes from the Annonaceae family.
The name Soursop is derived from the Dutch word zuurzak, which translates to “sour sack”.
It was first documented by Spanish historian Gonzalo Fernandez in 1526 and quickly spread around the world by the Spanish explorers.
It is widely grown in South and Central America, Guyana and the Caribbean, North and South Florida, India, South East Asia, Hawaii and tropical Africa.
Soursop is a small, low branching evergreen tree that can grow to approximately 30 feet in height and produces fruit that can weigh up to approximately 8.5 lbs.
