A pedal cyclist died on Friday evening, hours after he was struck down by a motorcar while crossing the Bagotsville Public Road, West Bank Demerara (WBD) in the vicinity of his home.
Dead is 60-year-old boat builder Clement Skeete of Lot 111 Bagotsville, WBD. Skeete was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he died while receiving medical attention. He sustained massive head injuries and a fractured neck.
The incident occurred around 19.30 hrs.
The Guyana Police Force said in a press release that Skeete was riding across the road when he ended up into the path of a car which was proceeding south. He was hit, fell onto the roadway and was taken to the hospital where he subsequently died.
Information revealed that the driver of the car, who is a member of the Guyana Fire Service was taken into custody and subjected to a breathalyzer test but no trace of alcohol was recorded. He is currently assisting with investigations.
Reports reaching Stabroek News revealed that Skeete had left home for work on Friday morning and was returning home when tragedy struck. After he was hit by the car, he was flung into the air before falling onto the roadway.
The accident was witnessed by his 10-year-old son who was awaiting his arrival home since it was customary for them to purchase ice cream together every Friday afternoon.
The child said his father was halfway across the road when the speeding car appeared from nowhere and hit him off his bicycle. The driver stopped a short distance away after realizing he had hit someone.
Skeete’s wife, Shellon Cameron, said she was at work at the National Cultural Centre when she received a call from a friend informing her of the accident. She said when she got to the scene, Skeete had already been taken to the hospital.
Upon enquiring, Cameron said, she was told that his condition was very critical. Minutes after he was taken to the GPH he succumbed to his injuries.
