Sales Department were crowned the Banks DIH Limited (Ltd) Inter-Department football champions, edging Trisco 3-1 in Friday’s final at the Thirst Park ground.
Devon Johnson broke the deadlock in seventh minute for the Sales Department with a finish into the right corner. It then became 2-0 five minutes onward as Rolex Smith scored from the penalty mark.
The score remained unchanged heading into the halftime interval but upon resumption, Trisco pulled one back as James Meredith s cored with a powerful shot from the right flank which settled into the roof of the left corner in the 22nd minute.
However, Johnson sealed the title for Sales Department three minutes later. Pouncing on a wayward back pass from the final defender intended for the goalkeeper, Johnson dribbled the onrushing custodian and finishing into the empty net.
Sales walked away with the championship trophy while the losers received the runners-up trophy. Prior to their victory in the final, Sales Department defeated Berbice 1-0 via a Devon Forde effort in the ninth minute while Trisco edged Stores 11-10 on sudden death penalty kicks after normal time ended 1-1. Philip Rowley was on target for Stores in the second minute while Nicquan Nestor equalised for Trisco one minute later.
Trisco also squeaked past Berbice on the back of Keith Fletcher’s 13th minute effort while the Media team defeated Central Service 2-1 in an exhibition fixture.
The inter department cricket competition will resume tomorrow at the same venue with another round of group fixtures.
