An encounter with Michael Parris

Dear Editor,

On Friday, October 14, 2016 I happened to be conducting some business at the Bourda Market and the vendor said to me that she would signal a taxi driver she usually uses to ferry me and the bulk of load. As I turned around and saw the driver approaching, I asked her if that was the driver and she said yes. I smiled and said to myself from within ‘The Gods must be crazy.’

As the driver pulled off, I looked at him and said, Olympian Parris? His response was in the affirmative. I went to work immediately and said to him that a section of the media has pioneered the saga of demanding the current President and his establishment at the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) vacate office because of Guyana’s failure to secure a medal at the just concluded Rio 2016 Olympic Games and what was his opinion? As a reminder, this started the saga which led to other areas in question.

Olympian Michael Parris’s words to me were that he totally objects to anyone who is making such a claim and the situation in question is beyond the GOA. He further said that so many things need to get fixed  and we have to work together as a team. He did also say that his expectation was that he would have been asked to accompany Team Guyana in Rio and possibly be the flag bearer because he is the only Guyanese to date to secure a medal. I couldn’t take the conversation further because I am totally ignorant of the process and perhaps the GOA can take it from here.

I was given permission by Olympian M.Parris to quote him about our conversation.

Yours faithfully,

T. Pemberton
