Two men pulled off a daring daylight robbery early yesterday morning at the Woodlands Hospital and escaped with in excess of $3 million.
According to Hospital Administrator Deonarine Memraj, around 7.27 am a lone man, armed with a gun, walked up to two of the cashiers and held them at gunpoint. He demanded that they hand over the money that was in register and they complied.
The man, who was wearing a hat and sunglasses, then rushed out of the compound and ran south on Carmichael Street where another man was waiting for him on a motorcycle. The two men then made good their escape.
Memraj had told Stabroek News that they were not yet able to figure out the amount of money that was lost since the receipts had also been taken. However, following investigations, the police later revealed that the sum would have been in excess of $3 million.
When Stabroek News visited the hospital yesterday morning, all operations were moving along as per normal and only the cashier staff, who were still visibly shaken, appeared to be affected by the incident.
When Stabroek News spoke to the taxi drivers that are usually outside of the hospital, they related that the only thing they saw as unusual was when the man rushed out of the hospital and ran down the road. “I didn’t even know what happen until after… them man done get away,” one of the taxi drivers said.
Another driver related that he was in his car and wasn’t even aware of what had happened until he heard the other drivers talking about it.
The police are currently investigating the incident and are reviewing CCTV tapes from the hospital’s cameras and from other businesses on the street.
