Rayon Jones, who was charged with the murder of Madewini mechanic Puranand Baljit, was yesterday committed to stand trial for the crime.
The decision was handed down by Magistrate Leron Daly, who found that a prima facie case was made out against Jones based on evidence led by the prosecution through its witnesses.
Jones was subsequently committed to stand trial for the offence at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Assizes.
He will remain on remand until that time.
It was alleged that on June 9, at Madewini, Jones allegedly murdered Baljit in the course or furtherance of a robbery.
Baljit, called ‘Andrew,’ of Lot 57 Madewini, was found during the night of June 9 bleeding on his bed, and bearing multiple stab wounds about the body, including one in the region of his heart. It was suspected that Jones stabbed Baljit through his bedroom window. Baljit’s parents reportedly heard screams coming from his bedroom and, upon checking, found him in bed, lying in a pool of blood.
He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre. A knife and a cellular phone were recovered by the police at the scene of the crime.
