The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) and the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) are engaged in active discussions with Demerara Timbers Limited (DTL) as it relates to the operations of the Company, the renewal of its Timber Sales Agreement (TSA) and the company honouring its financial obligations to the Guyana Forestry Commission.
This is according to a statement yesterday from MNR.
The Company is currently involved in discussions with the Labour Department of the Ministry of Social Protection and the Trade Unions to address issues relating to the dismissal of workers and planned retrenchment as the company seeks to deal with a challenging world market situation, the MNR release said.
Meanwhile, the MNR has noted the Company’s reassurance to work with the Government and all other stakeholders in the improvement and sustainability of the sector.
“The GFC will continue to monitor DTL’s operations to ensure commitments are on schedule, with compliance of the relevant regulations governing the sector”, the statement added.
