A miner was yesterday fined $25,000 by a city magistrate after he pleaded guilty to assaulting another man.
David Robertson, 21, was brought before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and read a charge which stated that on October 18, at Imbaimadai Village, Kamarang, he assaulted Mahendra Hunter, causing actual bodily harm.
Robertson, of Kamarang Village, pleaded guilty to the charge.
According to the prosecution’s case, Robertson and Hunter had a misunderstanding, which resulted in a fight.
It was during the fight that Robertson hoisted Hunter and threw him to the ground, which resulted in a bone in the man’s left shoulder slipping out.
Robertson did not deny the facts presented by the prosecution but stated that Hunter was thrown on sand and not concrete.
Chief Magistrate McLennan subsequently fined him $25,000 or eight weeks in jail as an alternative.
Robertson was given until November 3 to pay the fine or serve the prison sentence.
Robertson was also placed on a bond to keep the peace for one year. If the bond is broken, he will have to serve eight weeks in jail.
