A young robbery suspect was shot early yesterday morning by a member of a Professional Guard Service patrol, after it responded to a report of the attempted robbery of a company guard at Republic Bank Limited at Waterloo and New Market streets, Georgetown.
The youth, identified by police only as a “juvenile,” was shot to the face and on his body and was subsequently rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he underwent surgery.
The Guyana Police Force, in a statement, said the shooting occurred around 4am yesterday.
At the time, a female security guard on duty at the bank observed the suspect in the compound with her handbag, which she had left on a table.
The police said that she raised an alarm and the suspect dropped the bag before scaling the fence. The security guard then alerted her supervisor and shortly afterward a patrol arrived.
“A male fitting the description of the suspect was seen in the area and was confronted and in this intervening process, a round was discharged from the shotgun in possession of a member of the patrol,” the statement said.
Up to late yesterday afternoon, the shooter was being questioned by investigators.
