A ruthless Suriname team thumped hosts Guyana 5-0 yesterday to win the 2016 Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) badminton event yesterday at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
The visitors, who were clearly in top form, outclassed Guyana in the five matches which meant the hosts had to settle for second best.
Suriname’s Juan Delprado got things going by beating the experienced Jonathan Mangra 21-11, 21-17 in the boys’ singles and Santusha Ramzan produced similar results girls’ singles by whipping Guyana’s top female player Priyanna Ramdhani 21-15, 21-14.
In the boys’ doubles, Delprado joined forces with Jasha Atmodikromo and the pair edged Guyana’s Mangra and Ronald Chang Yuen winning 21-15, 19-21, 21-18.
As they did in the previous categories, Suriname took full advantage of the inexperienced Guyana side as Imani Mangroe and Chan Chan Yang blew away Guyanese Kara Abrams and Ambika Ramraj, 21-7, 21-18 in the girls doubles before Suriname ensured a clean sweep of the matches by winning the mixed doubles encounter despite a valiant effort from Ramdhani and Chang Yuen.
The Suriname pair of Atmodikromo and Ramzan won 21-16, 21-16.
