Like the opening day, Guyana and Suriname volleyball teams continued to split the series with Guyana’s male team – the defending champs – defeating Suriname’s male team 3-0 while Suriname’s women’s team defeated the local women 3-0 as the annual Inter Guiana Games volleyball competition continued at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
For the second consecutive match, Guyana’s male team hammered their Dutch rivals which means that the defending champions are tipped to make a clean sweep of the three match series when they play the final match today.
The first set which Guyana won 25-13, was another exhibition of the skills of the local players which they showed during Friday’s first match as they effortlessly outplayed their opponents in all departments.
Suriname had their best of the three outings in the second set but went down 14-25 nonetheless, and, with the two-set cushion under their belt, Samuel Fraser and his men mauled the Surinamese 25-7 to cap another comprehensive display.
The women’s match was an altogether different kettle of fish however as a lack of big tournament experience and on-field tactical moves saw the fame team walking away with a straight sets defeat.
Suriname dominated the first set, completely blowing away Guyana 25-5 before the hosts showed some amount of fight in losing the second match 21-25. The deficit proved insurmountable and the Guyanese women lost the third set 8-25.
Today’s final round of matches will commence at 13:00hrs.
