A man who was allegedly caught with an unlicenced firearm and matching ammunition in the Palmyra area was remanded to prison on Monday.
Kevin France, 51, of Lot 55 Palmyra Village, East Coast Berbice, appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court to face the charges of possession of a firearm without a licence and possession of ammunition without a licence.
France who was represented by Attorney-at-Law Charandass Persaud, pleaded not guilty to both charges. However, Prosecutor Inspector Godfrey Playter opposed bail based on the nature and prevalence of the offence. Inspector Playter noted that the accused was the only occupant of the car at the time of the bust.
On Saturday around 01:30 am, France, a driver from Palmyra Village was placed under arrest after he was allegedly discovered with the unlicenced 9 mm pistol and 13 rounds of ammunition.
France, when stopped in the vicinity of Main and Vryheid Road, allegedly sped away from the patrol vehicle, however, he was later intercepted in front of his residence in Palmyra Village. A search was conducted, and the pistol and ammunition were allegedly discovered on the front passenger seat.
Presiding Magistrate Alex Moore remanded France to prison until his next court date, 14 November.
