Several individuals including a pensioner were being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) last night after the minibus they were travelling in was hit by a motorcar at the corner of Regent and Albert streets. Also injured is a passenger from the motorcar.
At approximately 9:30 last night, motorcar PEE 8062, which was being driven north along Albert Street by a 21 year old driver identified only as Kwesi, failed to stop at the intersection of Albert and Regent and collided with minibus BTT 4213.
As a result of the collision, the Stabroek to Sophia route bus which was travelling west along recent street turned turtle several times before coming to a stop several feet away.
According to eyewitnesses both vehicles were travelling at a fast rate at the time of impact. The driver of the car who was visibly intoxicated, exited the vehicle after impact and attempted to flee the scene by running east along Regent Street. He was however stopped by a public-spirited citizen who detained him until the police arrived a few minutes later.
He was then taken into custody and transported to the Alberttown Police Station where a breathalyzer test was administered before he was taken into custody
The prisoner who identified himself as a mechanic claimed that the bus driver had signaled him to cross the major road by blinking his lights. This account was however contradicted by eyewitnesses who said that the bus had actually just overtaken another bus which had stopped at the corner. He also admitted to drinking at least five GT Beers at a funeral before getting behind the wheel.
“He [car driver] never even pause. I de wondering where he de beating going. Nothing but speed den bam he hit the bus flush by de conductor window and it spin over and over. He end up on the lantern post and the bus up the road. The only people who look like dey get seriously injured is a old man from de bus and de passenger in de car. Everybody else look ok but de two a dem unconscious,” a witness told Stabroek News.
