A man and a woman were yesterday read separate charges by a city magistrate, of fraudulently converting a combined total of $4 million.
Appearing before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, were 40-year-old Pauline Stewart, and 20-year-old Deodharry Odit, who were read separate charges of fraudulent conversion.
The charge against Stewart stated that between January 1, 2015 and July 28, 2016, at Georgetown, while being a clerk employed by Country Pride Enterprises, she fraudulently embezzled $2,085,305, property of Country Pride Enterprises.
Meanwhile, the charges read to Odit, stated that on September 27, at Georgetown, Odit forged a Republic Bank Limited cheque valued at $1,200,000, property of Naipaul Ramodar.
It is further alleged that on September 20, at Georgetown, with intent to defraud he conspired with others to forge a Republic Bank Limited cheque valued $800,000, also the property of Ramodar.
Both Stewart and Odit pleaded not guilty to the charges read.
According to the facts presented by Prosecutor Neville Jeffers, for Odit’s matter, both the defendant and the complainant are known to each other. He added that the defendant once lived with the complainant as a family member.
No facts in relation to Stewart’s matter, were presented by the prosecution.
Stewart was granted bail of $40,000, and has to report to the Brickdam Police Station every Friday. Her matter is adjourned to November 3.
Odit, on the other hand, was released on $50,000 bail, and is expected to make his next court appearance on November 14.
