A jury yesterday found Lloyd Britton not guilty of the 2013 murder of Elvis Fernandes, who was shot dead on Mandela Avenue during an argument between two motorists.
After about two hours of deliberations, the 12-member jury returned its unanimous verdict, which resulted in a visibly relieved Britton walking out of the High Court, in Georgetown, a free man.
The case was handed over to the jury yesterday afternoon after the trial judge, Justice James Bovell-Drakes, summed up for the jurors to deliberate.
The allegation against Britton, called ‘Lloyden Britton,’ of 77 Surat Drive, Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, was that he murdered Fernandes on July 26, 2013.
Fernandes was involved in an argument between a minibus driver and the driver of a car he was in at the time.
Police, in a statement, had said that Fernandes was shot to his chest by a passenger in the bus, who had begun discharging rounds.
The accused was represented by attorney Nigel Hughes, while the State’s case was presented by Prosecutor Tamieka Clarke.
