The bottom flat of the reconstructed Kitty Market will be outfitted with air conditioning units, according to Town Clerk Royston King.
King was at the time responding to concerns raised by vendors about the lack of ventilation at the market, which is now being completed.
“What we want to do is to create a market with air conditioning units.
So we would put in air conditioning units, extractor fans and other means of ventilation,” King told Stabroek News on Monday.
According to King, they would also install an automatic switchover generator to cater for power outages.
He also said the meat and fish section of the market would have refrigeration facilities, so as to meet public health standards.
Stabroek News was also told that a wing would be added to the western side of the market to accommodate 100 new applications from vendors.
Last week, Stabroek News reported that vendors were worried about the apparent lack of ventilation at the facility.
King had previously said that while the council had planned to install air conditioning units in the market, it would be restricted due to City Hall’s financial constraints.
Meanwhile during the statutory city council meeting on Monday, King said that the city is working to meet the deadline for the completion of the market but it might not be realised.
Electrical works and works on the floor are still to be completed, he reported.
At the end of September, King had said that 65% of works had been completed and round-the-clock work was ongoing to complete the remainder in time for the deadline.
The cost of the renovation was pegged at an estimated $240 million by the M&CC.
