With most of the big names playing ‘cat and mouse’ in the peloton, Raul Leal and Jamal John were able to lap all of the starters and share the spoils of the feature 35-lap event of the Payless Variety Store multi race programme at the National Park yesterday.
Despite the perfect conditions for racing, the starters, minus Leal and John, chose to feel each other out ahead of today’s lucrative Digicel cycle road race and fell prey to the wheels of the duo.
Much to their angst, they were called out in the 20th lap by race officials who put a halt to proceedings following the lack of competitive racing.
“They were told before the race once anyone is lapped, they would have to exit but some of them didn’t listen so we were forced to truncate the event” said race official, Joseph Britton.
Junior Niles, Paul Choo-We-Nam, Orville Hinds and Raynauth Jeffrey filled out the top six positions.
Prior to the feature race, Kennard Lovell (Veteran over 50), Jaikaran Sukhai (Veteran under 50), Julio Melville (Mountain Bike), Nigel Duguid (Juvenile), Alex Leung (BMX 6-9), Sherwin Sampson (BMX 9-12), Thuran Garbarran (BMX Boys 12-14) and Isaiah Sahadeo (BMX Boys and Girls) biked to victories in their respective categories.
The cycling season continues this morning on the outer circuit of the National Park with Digicel’s fifth annual cancer awareness event.
When the racing starts at 08:00hrs, the cyclists will no doubt up the ante, since in excess of $1M will be up for grabs.
