Over 150 complaints against cops in three months

The Guyana Police Force, over a three-month period, has received 154 complaints against officers, six of whom were dismissed during last month, while five were transferred to other locations pending investigations into police misconduct.

Acting Commissioner of Police David Ramnarine, who was addressing reporters at a press conference held yesterday as he wrapped up his 100 days in office, said that for the period August 1 to October 25, there have been 154 complaints, a 21% reduction in comparison to the same period last year.

During 2015, 615 complaints were made, of which 603 investigations have been completed. Ramnarine said it averaged 50 complaints per month.

Meanwhile, he said, one subordinate officer and five constables have been dismissed for the month of October.

Five others, including an inspector and two subordinate officers were transferred pending investigations into misconduct.

“One [investigation] has to do with the subordinate officer not being able to account for a .32 firearm received by her, while on duty, having been lodged by a civilian…,” Ramnarine said.

The acting Commissioner of Police said his 100 days in office were not without challenges since during that time 20 senior and junior officers and dozens of inspectors were on annual vacation.

At present, he said there are thirteen senior officers who are still on annual leave, ten of whom will resume duties on November 15.

“In law enforcement we are never going to get the full extent of appreciation and understanding from those we serve because of circumstances and factors which diminish the good efforts we make,” Ramnarine explained.
