President David Granger has said that current youth training programmes will be enlarged as government moves to increase the pool of young entrepreneurs.
During a recent taping of ‘The Public Interest’, Granger was asked whether the government would bring back an institution similar to the Guyana National Service and how it would work.
He responded, “We have a programme largely for the hinterland youths – HEYS [Hinterland Employment Youth Service] and that is a successor programme to the one that was started by the previous administration. It is meant to train out-of-school youth in skills which could help them to be self-employed.” He said that while there are other programmes such as the Sustainable Livelihood Entrepreneur-ship Development (SLED) he was impressed with the youths’ attitude towards business and have asked for the programmes to be extended in 2017.
“The government will continue to run programmes for youth training, particularly in skills,” he said stating that in the final analysis they want to see a bigger pool of entrepreneurs “rather than policeman and soldiers and civil servants.”
“We would have made some progress and the programmes will be enlarged and augmented,” he added.
