The leader of a Christian Church, who branded himself as Guyana’s first Pope, has found himself at the centre of a controversy over a sex tape with some of his congregation questioning his leadership while others vehemently defended him.
On Saturday evening a sex tape and subsequent photos of Pastor Philbert London went viral and trended throughout yesterday with numerous local social media comments on the issue as it pertained to religion and sex.
This newspaper viewed the tape and visited the church, Dr Philbert London’s Miracle Center, located on on D’urban Street, Georgetown and tried contacting London by mobile phone. Several calls to his number went unanswered but a text message was received asking who was calling.
Communication ceased when this newspaper informed of the caller and the reason for calling.
However, the church was locked up, with neigbours informing that while there was a service yesterday morning, London did not show up.
The self-proclaimed pope had one post to his Facebook profile, taken from Psalms 35:4, which read “Let them be put to shame and dishonor who seek and require my life; let them be turned back and confounded who plan my hurt!”
Many persons were quick to criticise London over the tape.
However, for one follower, it was a conspiracy by persons jealous of the church to bring him down; a plan that she would not be a part of.
She said that while she did not see the tape she knows that her leader would not betray his congregation.
“I do not believe. It is evil people that wants to bring him down…not his holiness. Look people can do all sorts of things these days. They probably take his picture and put it on somebody and make whatever video. Don’t play with this thing called internet and so I tell you.
All sorts of things is happen,” the woman said.
“…he didn’t come today because he has a lot of things to do and is maybe out of the country. He travels a lot you know. It is not the first time he not there,” the church member said.
