Three men in their 20s, accused of raping a woman in October, were yesterday remanded to prison after they could not afford the $250,000 bail on which they each were placed.
Rose Hall residents Sherwin Scott, 27, a former member of the Guyana Police Force’s Tactical Service Unit and his brother Rayon Scott, 24, a labourer along with Wilton Lepps, 27, of Albion Village, Corentyne appeared before the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court to answer a charge of raping a 20-year-old woman.
The men were not required to plead to the indictable charge and after they were unable to post bail, they were remanded until their next court appearance at the Albion Magistrate’s Court on December 19.
It is alleged that around 4.45 am on October 23, the young woman was leaving a popular nightclub in Berbice and reportedly asked Lepps, who is known to her, for a ride home. However, after she entered the car, reportedly with Lepps and the Scott brothers, they informed her that they had to make a drop off on the Corentyne first.
According to reports, while in Albion Village, the men stopped at an abandoned house and invited the woman inside, where they reportedly took turns raping her.
The complainant reportedly told the police that she fought her way out of the house leaving almost all of her clothes and stopped a lorry which was passing. The driver took her to the Albion Police Station where a report was filed. The suspects were then subsequently arrested.
