A Cornelia Ida man was yesterday charged with the murder of fellow resident Prakash Mahipaul, whose body was found at the Hague foreshore more than a month ago.
Rooplall Gobin, called “Boyo,” was charged at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court with murdering Mahipaul, called “Sunil,” a father of two who resided at Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara, on October 6.
No additional details were presented to the court and Gobin, who was not required to plead to the indictable charge, was remanded to prison until December 5 by Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool.
The body of Mahipaul, 41, was discovered around 11.30am on October 6 at the Hague foreshore, one day after he was reported missing.
Stabroek News was reliably informed that one day prior to the discovery, Mahipaul and his wife had an argument and he threatened to end his life. He attempted to consume a poisonous substance but was prevented from doing so by relative.
As a result, Mahipaul left home and never returned.
A post-mortem examination performed on his remains revealed that he died as a result of drowning and blunt trauma to the head.
Mahipaul’s wife was arrested for questioning following the discovery of his body and was later released.
Gobin was arrested during the weekend for questioing and allegedly admitted to committing the crime.
