Berbice crushed Stores by a 6-2 scoreline when the Banks DIH Limited Inter-Department 9-Aside Football Championship commenced on Tuesday at the Thirst Park ground.
The contest was basically over upon entering the halftime interval as the Berbicians possessed a commanding 4-0 advantage.
- Benton recorded a first half brace in the 40-minute affair as he found the back of the net in the 13th and 15th minute while K. Dey and S. Hinds found the back of the net in the first and 14th minute respectively.
The rout continued in the second stanza as S. Hinds and G. Curt etched their name on the scorer’s sheet in the 22nd and 34th minute correspondingly. For the loser, consolation goals came in the form of P. Rowley and L. Downer in the 44th and 56th minute apiece.
The event which will be played on a round-robin format, will feature six teams divided into two groups of three. Group-A consists of Berbice, Stores and Trisco while group-B features Central Service, Water Plant and Sales Department.
Following the conclusion of the group stage, the respective zonal winners will advance directly to the grand finale. Winner of the tournament will receive the championship trophy while the runner-up will walk away with the respective accolade.
Action in the event will resume on November 14th at the same venue with a doubleheader. In the opening fixture at 18:00hrs, Sales will oppose Central Service while Stores will lock horns with Trisco at 19:00hrs.
