A law student was released on $50,000 bail yesterday after denying a charge that he stole $90,000 from the bank account of a friend of his girlfriend.
The court of Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan heard that on November 3rd, at Camp Street, Georgetown, Kevon Henry, 26, of Lot 4 Ketley Street, stole $90,000, which was the property of Marlon Gardener, from his Republic Bank account. Henry, who is also a part-time bartender in addition to being a law student, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers, who had no objections to Henry receiving bail, told the court that the Gardener had left his bank card and pin number with a female friend. The female friend is the girlfriend of the accused, the prosecutor explained.
Jeffers said that Henry stole Gardener’s bank card from his girlfriend and went into her phone to acquire the pin number. The prosecutor said that Henry then went to the Republic Bank on Camp Street and withdrew the money from Gardener’s account.
According to the prosecutor, there is surveillance footage from the bank that shows Henry at the bank withdrawing the money.
Jeffers later told the court that the police file in the matter is incomplete as some statements are outstanding. As a result, the Chief Magistrate placed the accused on bail and adjourned the case until November 28th for statements.
