‘Six Head’ Lewis to blame for accident that claimed his life

The attorney for Manx Powers, the driver who is charged with causing the death of former world champion boxer Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis, yesterday blamed the deceased for the fatal accident and said his client should not be called on to lead a defence.

It is alleged that on May 4, 2015, at New Hope Public Road, East Bank Demerara, Powers, 32, of Campbellville Housing Scheme, drove PNN 596 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Lewis.

It is alleged that on the day of the accident, Lewis was riding a bicycle on his way to visit a friend when he was struck down by a car as he attempted to cross the road. He was later picked up by an ambulance that was passing at the time and rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

When Powers’ trial continued yesterday, defence attorney Peter Hugh told Magistrate Fabayo Azore that from the prosecution’s evidence, it was clear that Lewis would have ridden into the path of his client, who was driving in the same direction. He noted that Lewis’ death was in no way caused by the driving of Powers or the speed at which he was travelling.

The court heard that it was the actions of the deceased, who ventured into the path of Powers, that resulted in his own demise.

It was on these bases that Hugh argued that his client should not be called upon to lead a defence.

Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford requested an adjournment so that he could reply to Hugh’s submissions. This request was granted by Magistrate Azore, who adjourned the matter until November 18th.
