The Ministry of Public Infrastructure continues to monitor the erosion of a section of the sea dam in Mahaica and Chief River and Sea Defence Officer Ken vin Samad says it will be addressed next year.
The residents of Mosquito Hall, Unity, Mahaica, had pointed out several weeks ago that the dam had developed a breach almost a month prior and no one was addressing the situation. They had indicated that they were scared that high tides could see water flowing through the breach and flooding their lands.
When Stabroek News visited the area, about four feet of the dam built to block the rising tides from intruding onto the land, seemed to have been breached.
But Samad explained that the ministry is currently monitoring the erosion and residents have no reason to worry as they are not close to the dam. He said the ministry is waiting for the 2017 budget to be passed in order to fix the situation. The budget is to be read on November 28.
When Stabroek News spoke to residents last Sunday they related that they were still concerned about the imminent danger that the breach poses, though so far they have had no instance of the sea getting onto to land.
