Convicted drug trafficker Barry Dataram and his common-law wife Anjanie Boodnarine are set to face a new trial over unlawful possession of ammunition.
The charge against Dataram and Boodnarine states that on April 16, 2015, at Diamond Housing Scheme, they had in their possession 180 .223 live rounds without being holders of a firearm licence.
During yesterday’s proceedings, Dataram and Boodnarine stood before Magistrate Judy Latchman in a Georgetown court as they heard from the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) Prosecutor Konyo Sandiford.
The prosecutor said CANU is prepared to re-serve statements, although they would have been served already, and have the trial commence.
The court heard that there are a total of 5 witnesses for the prosecution.
Magistrate Latchman subsequently adjourned the matter to November 25, when the trial is expected to commence. Dataram was recently sentenced to a total of eight years in jail; five years for narcotics possession and a total of three and a half years in jail for charges of attempting to defeat the administration of the law, forging a passport and leaving the country without presenting himself to an immigration officer.
Pending the commencement of her trial as it relates to allegedly attempting to defeat the administration of the law to avoid the consequences, forging a passport and leaving the country without presenting herself to an immigration officer, Boodnarine remains in custody.
Boodnarine, who was also charged alongside Dataram with narcotics possession, had the charges against her dismissed. Trevor Gouveia and Kevin Charran, who were also charged, were also acquitted.
