Dear Editor,
I refer to the new minimum wage which was reported on the front page and page two of the Guyana Chronicle dated Thursday, October 20, 2016 which is a very good thing for workers involved in the private sector.
However, two very important points are missing which are as follows: Which category of workers are involved? Is it sweepers, maids, labourers, shop attendants/cashiers, etc? And from when does this agreement take effect? Is it payable from the 1st of November 2016, or the 1st of January 2017 or 2018 or 2030 ‒ or is it that the private sector will decide to pay from when? If this is the case then the Cabinet decision is of no use.
As a private sector employee I would be very grateful if the government could clarify this very important issue.
Yours faithfully,
R Rajkumar
