Eastveldt squeaked past Tavelle’s Academy by a 2-1 scoreline when the Turbo Energy Drink sponsored Fruta Conquerors u19 Academy Football League commenced yesterday at the Tucville Community ground.
First half goals from Paul Chung and Travis Ramnaught in the fifth and 18th ensured the East Ruimveldt-based unit walked away with all three points.
On the other hand, Troy Ross scored for the loser in the 32nd minute. Chung gave Eastveldt the lead five minutes into play compliments of a powerful shot from outside the right side of the field.
Ramnaught made it 2-0 13 minutes onward as a right side cross was dropped by the goalkeeper, allowing the onrushing forward to simply tap in unchallenged inside the six-yard box.
Tavelle’s Academy eventually pulled one back in the form of Ross, who unleashed a thunderous strike from outside the left of the penalty into the top left-hand corner.
The second half failed to match the quality of the opening period, with the noteworthy moment coming in the 50th minute as Oslin Lewis was shown a red card for using abusive language towards the official.
Meanwhile up to press time, Fruta Conquerors and Pele FC were slated to face off. Action in the event will resume tomorrow at the same venue.
In the opening at 17:00hrs, Georgetown Football Club (GFC) will oppose Tavelle’s Academy while Uitvlugt Warriors will oppose Order and Discipline from 19:00hrs.
The event will feature 12 teams divided into two groups of six, with nine teams coming from the Georgetown area alongside Linden’s Botofago, West Demerara’s Uitvlugt and East Coast of Demerara’s Buxton United.
Following the conclusion of the group stage, the top two finishers in each zone will progress to the semi-final round. Other sponsors of the event include the Prudential Tech and Oasis Water.
