Junior national U17 player Alex Cheeks fashioned the first upset of the Farfan and Mendes Junior Squash Championship, defeating Category-A favourite, Caribbean Girls U19 runner-up Taylor Fernandes 3-2, on Wednesday’s opening night at the Georgetown Club.
In a match that could have gone either way, Taylor won the first game 11- 6, but Alex bounced back to win the second game 11 – 6. Taylor then won a close third game 11 – 9, but Alex again rebounded to take the fourth game 11 – 4. The fifth game was close throughout, but it seemed all over for Taylor when Alex had match ball at 10 – 7. Taylor refused to concede, and won the next three points to even the score at ten all. The scores were again level at eleven, before Alex won the next two points to secure a hard earned victory.
Daniel Islam bested sibling Anthony Islam in straight sets 11 – 8, 11 – 1, 11 – 8 in the second match of the division.
In Category-B, Samuel Ince-Carvahal downed Maya Collins 11 – 8, 11 – 5, 11 – 4, while Michael Alphonso crushed Dominic Collins 11 – 1, 11 – 3, 11 – 1 in the lone Category-C encounter.
Meanwhile in Category-D, Abosaide Cadogan downed Jason Gomes 11 – 3, 11 – 6, 11 – 7, and Kirsten Gomes brushed aside Aliyah Persaud 11 – 7, 11 – 0, 11 – 5. In other results, Mohyryan Baksh crushed Zachary Persaud 11 – 6, 12 – 10 and James Mekdeci edged Paige Fernandes 11 – 3, 7 – 11, 11 – 7, in Category-E.
Mikhail Persaud overcame Nicholas Verwey 9 – 11, 11 – 7, 11 – 8, while Louis Da Silva brushed aside Liam Carpenter 11 – 8, 11 – 4, and Chad De Abreu needled Shiloh Asregado 10 – 12, 11 – 8, 11 – 7 in the Category-F matchups.
In Category-G, Jahcinta Adams defeated Teija Edwards 11 – 13, 11 – 9, 11 – 4 while Isabella Ramjohn battled past Osmond Mack 11 – 9, 3 – 11, 12 – 10.
In Category-I, Aishani Persaud defeated Grant Fernandes 11-6, 11-7, while Noah Rahaman blanked Dhiren Persaud 11-7, 11-4, and Malia Maikoo crushed Jared Saul 11-4, 11-5.
